New alliance between the Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu and the BSC to advance pediatric research

The Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu (IRSJD) has formalized a strategic alliance with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), an agreement that aims to boost pediatric and biomedical research, especially in the field of rare diseases. This commitment represents a step forward in consolidating the institution as a reference center in biomedical data research and optimizing efficiency in the development of high-impact scientific projects.

The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation that will facilitate knowledge exchange, resource optimization, and the promotion of synergies between research groups. This will help accelerate the translation of scientific advances into clinical practice, improving patient care and treatment quality.

Joint lines of work with the BSC

Currently, several priority lines of work are already being promoted in collaboration with the BSC:

  • Capacity to provide computational support to researchers at Sant Joan de Déu.
  • Implementation of accessible resources developed within the IMPACT-Data project.
  • Support in the development and implementation of infrastructure to enable AI algorithm computing.
  • Creation of a joint bioinformatics platform that combines computing power and specialized knowledge.
  • Staff exchange and potential creation of joint research groups.

"This strategic alliance represents a firm step in our commitment to generate high-quality knowledge and transform it into truly applicable solutions in the field of health. It will allow us to be more efficient and maximize the impact of the research we carry out," explains Dr. Joan Comella, director of the Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu.

"For the BSC, the alliance with SJD represents a great opportunity to implement our developments in a clinical environment in collaboration with top experts, thereby contributing to the consolidation of research infrastructures that ultimately lead to greater understanding and treatment of diseases," says Alfonso Valencia, ICREA professor and director of Life Sciences at the BSC.

Pediatric Research and Technological Innovation Alliance - PReTI

PReTI (Pediatric Research Translation Initiative) is a strategic alliance aimed at increasing the operational capacity of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona (SJD) in biomedical data research, particularly in the field of rare diseases.

This initiative seeks to promote the translation of scientific knowledge into clinical practice, facilitating the efficient use of data to advance the diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases. Through PReTI, efforts are being made to integrate and optimize the management of clinical and molecular data, fostering collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and other institutions.

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center joins this strategic alliance, which also includes the Institut of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), Centre Nacional d'Anàlisi Genòmica (CNAG), Institut de Salut Global de Barcelona (ISGlobal), Instituto de investigación biomédica de Barcelona (IRB), Institut de Ciències Fotòniques (ICFO), Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), IrsiCaixa, and the Institut de Recerca contra la Leucèmia Josep Carreras.
